NWEC Waste Management Handbook
Purpose
Reflecting RUG’s dedication to advancing environmental education and sustainability, the Waste Management Handbook was birthed to use as an educational resource for the Nationwide Waste Education Campaign (NWEC) – RUG’s flagship Awareness and Behaviour Change Initiative that educates and empowers pupils and school communities to adopt proper waste management practices including upcycling and source segregation.
This resource is intended to serve as a hands-on environmental education guide for schools and communities, offering practical strategies that encourage responsible waste management practices, strengthen recycling efforts, and promote a circular economy with focus on plastic waste. It aims to inspire students, educators, and community leaders to take meaningful action in cultivating a generation of environmental champions who will drive sustainable change in Ghana and beyond.
For a decade and counting, RUG continues to empower young Ghanaians with the skills and knowledge needed to confront climate and waste challenges directly. The development of the Handbook is one of such many empowerment efforts.
Development & Funding
On the backdrop of NWEC, the development of the handbook was a collaborative effort shaped by the contributions of educators, students, partners, and stakeholders who shared a common vision for environmental sustainability. Built on the foundation laid by the NWEC Project, the handbook embodies both practical solutions and visionary leadership, making it a powerful tool for promoting environmental education and inspiring lasting change.
The Handbook development was funded by the Saxon Youth Foundation via the 2018 “Genialsozial – Deine Arbeit gegen Armut” programme, and was executed directly under the Nationwide Waste Education Campaign Project.
Why It Is Available Online
Real change begins with education and action. By making this handbook available online, RUG ensures that schools, communities, and individuals across Ghana and beyond can have free access. This expands its reach, and allows educators, students, and environmental ambassadors to integrate waste management principles into learning spaces and everyday life. By removing barriers to access, RUG empowers communities to adopt responsible waste management practices and nurtures the next generation of environmental stewards.
