Women in Conservation and Sustainability in Agricultural Development is an initiative by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Students Association (CANARSA) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in Kumasi. The aim of this initiative is to involve females of the college in the global fight for environmental sustainability. The program, launched on the 23rd of November, 2019, had several members of the college attending including notable speakers to grace the occasion.
As part of the launch was the WICSAD Standard Challenge, which was facilitated by Recycle Up! Ghana. The challenge was to give the students the chance to identify environmental issues in the society and come up with business solutions to them.
On the evening of the 22nd November, 2019, a workshop was held for the participants of the Standard Challenge by the Co-founder, Mr. Alhassan Baba Muniru and the Executive Director, Mr. Abdulrahim Shaibu-Issah to guide them on building their business plan along with guidelines that will be needed for the presentation.
The presentation featured 12 candidates in 5 teams: EC3, Crystal Waste Management, A&A, ALBSAM and Adonis. The issues addressed ranged from plastic waste management to food waste management. Although all the ideas were very interesting, team Crystal Waste Management was adjudged the best.
In recognition for their efforts, all team members were automatically invited to join in the Recycle Up! Ghana Startup Weekend organised as part of the incubator program. Also, the winners of the Standard Challenge, were automatically added to the Incubator Program, so they will continue to develop their plan.
