In applying solutions together, we tend to solve local plastic waste problems with local solutions. This is the hallmark of recycle up your school and recycle up Ghana. Recycle up Ghana started in 2014 in Kumasi and in 2015, Kumasi and Cape Coast experienced it.This year we are adding Accra. Recycle up your school is a project that concentrates on the various senior high schools that participated in the recycle up Ghana summer camp. Currently we have 8 senior high schools and still counting, we hope to cover up to 15 schools by close of October in Kumasi only.
The team started a tour where we meet each school’s assembly to talk to them about the importance of segregation as well as plastic recycling. Participants also get trained in up-cycling plastics into useful artefacts such as raincoats, football nets etc.in the middle of the semester, the following schools were visited Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ School, located in Kumasi Tanoso. This school worn an environmental award for being the first school in Ashanti to practise waste segregation. This school has started in a small way making organic manure from its kitchen leftover.
Prempeh College on the next day hosted the team at an assembly where the headmaster fully endorsed Recycle up your School as the future to solve Ghana’s waste problems. The school through the club was given gloves and some special dustbins for the collection of plastic waste in the school.
TI Amass, the 9 times winners of Super zonal sport in Kumasi are also not left out. The club executives of this school shared some experience they had during the Recycle up Camp and motivated the students to help make the Sustainable goals set by the United Nations for the world a reality. Kumasi secondary Technical school at Patasi was also visited during an assembly, the team joined the school in the assembly activates and donated some bins and gloves to the school.
Still on the tour, the team is yet to storm Kumasi Anglican School, Opoku Ware School, Knust Secondary school and Kumasi Academy.
