CAPE COAST

The day started very early. As early as 7:00 am, Participants had their breakfast and were ready to start the Day’s activities. The first place the whole team visited was a waste disposal site at Nkanfoa, a suburb of Cape Coast. They were led by Mr. Asabre Charles Ampomah of the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly. He spoke about how waste is being disposed at the site and some measures the Assembly has put in place to effectively manage.

The team then visited Cyclus Elmina Plastic Recycling Limited, a recycling firm in the Central Region. They were educated on the processes that plastic goes through to be recycled. This involves Plastic Collection, Manual Sorting, Chipping, Washing and Pelleting among others.

At around 1:23 pm, the team set off to Kakum National Park where they had lunch and took a walk on the famous Kakum Canopy Walk. After the long walk, Participants had reflections on the day’s activities with Fred at the park. The team then returned to Cape Coast Polytechnic, took their supper and prepared for the next day.

In Kumasi
Day 4 of the recycle Up summer camp was a very interesting and educative day. Participants experienced the effects of Plastic waste in our local communities. The day started exactly at 7:30 am with breakfast, by 8:00, am the bus for the trip had arrived.
participants were first taken to Atonsu a community in Kumasi, Ghana. At Atonsu, the participants were grouped into 5 and were led by a mentor each to interact with the residents of the communities to identify the problems they are facing with their waste [Plastics]. After the interactions, each group gave a summary of the problems that were identified in the communities.
From there, the Recycle Up! Ghana [RUG] team also went to the Oti land fill site in Kumasi. Oti landfill site is one of the four engineered land fill sites in the country. The participants were taken through how waste [Solid and Liquid] are processed at the site. The RUG team came back to queens for lunch. After lunch, the Team took a trip to the Rattray Park, where participants got to appreciate the cleaner side of the country and how important it is to get rid of the plastic waste in the country. In the even the participants reflected on what they experienced from their trip and interactions.
